Tupac’s estate celebrates ‘Greatest Hits’ anniversary with new merch
Tupac’s estate celebrates ‘Greatest Hits’ anniversary with
new merch
20 years on
from the release of Greatest Hits, the estate of Tupac Shakur have announced
the release of a brand new merch collection.
Last week,
Tupac Shakur’s estate began to tease the release of something on November 24th.
Consisting of little more than the words ‘1998’, and ‘Saturday 11/24’, it sent
diehard supporters of the late icon into a frenzy.
While many
fans began to believe it may have been a new posthumous record, others noted
this date coincided with the 20th anniversary of Greatest Hits, and may be
something of a special celebration.
Taking to
Instagram earlier today, Tupac’s estate has confirmed that they are indeed
celebrating the 20th anniversary of greatest hits, announcing a limited edition
merch collection.
Consisting
of graphic hoodies, T-shirts, baseball caps, and a vinyl reissue of Greatest
Hits, the new collection has been made available via the official Tupac online
store.
Of course,
dedicated fans are still hanging out for news of a brand new posthumous
compilation.
As reported
on The industry Observer last month, Shakur’s estate recently emerged
victorious in a five-year legal battle that centred around the ownership of
unreleased songs by the late artist.
Back in
2013, Tupac’s mother – Afeni Shakur – originally filed the lawsuit against
Entertainment One, who she claimed had failed to pay royalties on the 2007
compilation album Beginnings: The Lost Tapes 1988–1991.
While Afeni
claimed that Tupac’s estate was owed $1.1 million, it was noted that
Entertainment One had purchased the rights to Tupac’s music from Death Row Records
after the latter label went bankrupt back in 2006.
As a result,
Entertainment One were also in possession of a cache of unreleased master
recordings made by Tupac, something that his mother wanted returned to his
estate.
Five years
on from the lawsuit’s initial filing, Entertainment One were ordered to pay a
six-figure amount to Shakur’s estate, and relinquish control of the unreleased
master recordings.
Though we
haven’t seen a new compilation announced this weekend, Tupac’s estate does have
a whole lot of unreleased material in their possession, so who knows what the
future holds?
